Bill Bieber, Class of 1960 (Morningside)

Bill was the Edina hockey team’s All-Conference starting goalie when Willard Ikola first arrived as Head Coach in 1958. The following year, under Bill’s guidance as Captain, the Edina team advanced to the State Tournament for the very first time in 1960 and Bill added All-State and All-Tournament team honors to his multiple All-Conference awards and 4 varsity letters.

Bill attended the University of Michigan and played hockey there for 4 years, helping the Wolverines win the NCAA Championship in 1964. Bill graduated from U-Michigan with a degree in Business Administration and returned to Minneapolis to work at his father’s company, Acrometal. By age 30, Bill was named the sole owner, CEO and President and continued to grow the firm now called ATEK. A lifetime philanthropist, in 1990 he founded the Bieber Family Foundation to continue his passion of providing support to local non-profits that service vulnerable adults.

Today Bill lives in Excelsior. He remains active on the Board at ATEK and the Foundation. He enjoys hunting, fishing, horseback riding and spending time with his three grown children, Christy, James and Kerrie, and their families.

Ted Cadwell, Class of 1983

Due to progressive arthritis, Ted couldn’t participate in the sports he loved, so starting in 8th grade, he became the official team statistician for Edina High School Football, Hockey and Baseball teams. For five years, Ted could be found on the sidelines or in the stands with his signature kelly green jacket and clipboard in hand. His detailed data collection and unstoppable enthusiasm provided valuable insight and analysis to 15 teams and set the standard for all team statisticians at Edina High School and the Lake Conference.

Ted went on to receive a degree in Economics from Harvard in 1986, an MBA from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management in 1988 and a JD from the Law School at the University of Minnesota in 1992.

Ted returned to Edina and began a distinguished legal career while also giving back to his community and supporting Edina High School and Minnesota professional sports. He holds active volunteer positions with the Arthritis Foundation, The Harvard Club of Minnesota and the Church of St. Patrick of Edina. Ted remains an avid live and fantasy sports fanatic and continues to attend as many Edina High School athletic competitions as he can.

Jim Carroll, Class of 1986

By the time Jim reached Edina High School, his five older brothers had cemented the Carroll name in Edina sports history and Jim’s many contributions compounded this incredible family legacy. Jim played Soccer, Hockey and Baseball and earned 6 total varsity letters. Jim was the 1985 baseball team’s leading hitter and named All-Conference as a junior and senior. As a senior, Jim was the hockey team’s leading scorer, was named to the All-Conference team and was the Star-Tribune Co-Metro Player of the Year.

Jim attended Michigan Technological University on a hockey scholarship, joined the club soccer team and was the Public Address Announcer for the MTU football team which led to a life-long “side job” for him.

After graduating from Michigan Tech, Jim returned to Minnesota and began a dual career in Sales & Marketing and Public Address Announcer. Jim has been behind the microphone for over 24 years broadcasting games for the Vikings, Wild, NCAA and Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Tournaments. Jim is also a 30+ year MSHSL hockey referee and volunteer coach for Eastview Baseball and Hockey Associations.

Jim currently lives in Apple Valley with his wife Debbe and their children Taylor and Drew.

Kevin McCoy, Class of 1979 West

Kevin was the starting middle linebacker for the 77-78 & 78-79 Edina West football teams. Kevin was a natural athlete who also played basketball and baseball. His senior year, Kevin led the football team with 121 Tackles, 12 Sacks and anchored the defensive line for the State Championship team that set a defensive state postseason record (total score of 73-0 in 4 games) that can never be broken. Kevin was voted MVP by his teammates, named to the All-Conference, All-Metro and All-State teams, then was a Captain on the Minnesota All-Star Prep team.

Following graduation, Kevin was a full scholarship middle linebacker for the University of North Dakota. He graduated in 1983, returned to Edina and embarked on a career with AT&T’s Premier Signature Client group. Kevin shares his love of sports with everyone, especially his wife Anne and their two children, Shannon and Danny.

In over 34 seasons of volunteer coaching, membership and leadership for Edina Football, Baseball, Basketball, Softball and Volleyball Associations, Kevin has touched the lives of over 500 young Edina athletes with his passion, experience and infectious, positive attitude.

Kelly Meredith Kapeller, Class of 1989

Kelly started gymnastics at age 4 and excelled at every event she attempted in the gym. By the age of 12, Kelly was one of the best gymnasts on her Club team and was encouraged to try out for the Edina High School team despite being only in 7th grade. Kelly went on to a six-year Varsity career on the Gymnastics team, earning All-Conference award recognition in all six years, the only Edina gymnast to receive this. Kelly anchored the 1985 team that captured the Team State Championship, was a two-time Team Captain in 1988 & 1989 and was selected the Best All Around Gymnast in the Lake Conference.

After graduating Edina High School, Kelly attended University of Minnesota, graduating in 1994 with a degree in Graphic Arts. Kelly now runs her own graphic artist firm and lives in Minnetonka with her husband Brian and three daughters.

Linda Soucek Stecklein, Class of 1980 West

Linda was a three-sport athlete during her years at Edina West High School. Linda played club soccer, was a three-year Varsity starter for volleyball and basketball, and team Captain for both during her senior year. Due to her success, attitude and leadership on the courts, Linda was selected as the Edina West Athena Award recipient in 1980.

Linda attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she joined the Women’s Soccer Club team but also joined the Volleyball team her freshman year as a walk-on. The next year, the NCAA sanctioned Women’s soccer for the first time and UW-Madison’s Club team, including Linda, turned Division I. Linda went on to earn four Varsity letters and as a senior, she was the MVP and named to the NCAA All-American team.

After graduation from UW-Madison, Linda returned to Minnesota and began a career in business. In her free time, Linda plays hockey, tennis & pickleball and enjoys vacationing with her husband, Robb, and their children Jill, Ross and Lee. They especially treasure the family trips they’ve made to watch their daughter, Lee, win the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four Championship, Olympic Silver medal in Sochi and Olympic Gold medal in PyeongChang.

Andy Turnbull, Coach

For 26 winters, Andy Turnbull has been the face of Edina Nordic (Cross Country) skiing. In addition to coaching for Edina High School, he coaches the Minnesota Valley Ski Team, the Loppet Foundation, the 2004 Junior Olympics. Andy also runs the snow making equipment & grooms the Hiihto trails behind Edina High School where the team practices, volunteered at the 2010 & 2016 Junior Nationals Cross Country Ski Championships and has been an individual participant in 22 (and counting) American Birkebeiner Marathons.

When he’s not coaching, Andy is keeping current with Nordic ski and training equipment, technology and race information through his career at Hoigaards where he has been a fixture for over 20 years. Addition to his retail career, he is considered the official “Voice of Hoigaards”, welcoming phone callers to the store, providing the hours, directions and latest sale and promotional information.

Andy and his wife, Julie, live in Edina and spend as much time as possible outdoors year-round with their skis, canoes and bikes.
